A. Danko refers to Merz’s warning about the withdrawal of EU funds, stating that Slovaks are not German slaves

Bratislava – Slovaks are not German slaves. This was stated by the chairman of the SNS, Andrej Danko, in response to the statements of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, according to which Germany is considering the possibility of proposing in Brussels to withdraw EU funds from Slovakia if it continues to deviate from the common direction of the EU. TASR reports on this.
“The Germans are telling us that if we do not obey, if we have our own opinion, they will take away our EU funds. As if it were not enough what the strong states in the European Union are doing, as if it were not enough what a well-thought-out system they have created to cut off Eastern states from cheap energy, to lose competitiveness,” said Danko.
According to him, the Germans and the French are bothered that they cannot maintain the standard of living they have become accustomed to. “They have a huge number of immigrants, a high social standard that the Germans can no longer afford. We all know well what they are doing here, some German companies – they produce goods here and the profits go to Germany, yet we appreciate every German investment, every cooperation,” he emphasized.
However, what the German chancellor did is, according to Danko, outrageous arrogance. “I cannot imagine any chancellor expressing themselves in this way in the European Union in relation to another state. The German chancellor forgets that we are not a colony, Slovakia. Unfortunately, they behave in many ways exactly like that. They have the idea that they can dictate everything to us,” he stressed.
“However, I believe that our Minister of Foreign Affairs, Juraj Blanár (Smer-SD), and our government will clearly tell the Chancellor of Germany at the next meeting in Brussels that he is no more than our Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) and that he must respect us. I am very sorry that the German chancellor does not realize that such statements are breaking the European Union. We are not your slaves, and I believe you understand that in Germany,” added the chairman of the SNS.
Prime Minister Fico sharply protested against the statements of Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The chancellor’s statements are unacceptable in modern Europe, he said on Tuesday during a visit to Armenia. Blanár added that the thinking of Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz is unacceptable. If any of the states raises objections, it does so for its sovereign position, and then it is necessary to negotiate, not to look for coercive mechanisms. (May 27)
