Access to the Chinese market: for the EU, Beijing is not doing enough

Shanghai (China) – The obstacles to accessing the Chinese market “are not decreasing, they are increasing,” said EU Ambassador Jorge Toledo on Friday at an event held in Shanghai. “We have not been taken seriously regarding trade barriers,” he lamented,
“We seriously feel that not only are the competitive conditions not fair for our companies in China, but the situation is not improving… There is something to be done,” Mr. Toledo said.
Beijing stated that its ties with Europe bring “valuable stability” amid the turmoil caused by Washington.
But these relations are difficult. Europe has imposed restrictions on Beijing’s investments in sensitive sectors and has implemented additional tariffs on Chinese electric cars.
China is, however, the second largest economic partner of the EU, after the United States, but European companies have long complained that local firms receive preferential treatment in the Chinese market. (May 9, 2025)
