Albania in parliamentary elections on May 11, Gonzato: Important indicator on the path to EU membership

“Elections are a key moment for a democracy and an important indicator in a country’s journey towards membership in the European Union.”
This was stated by the European Union ambassador in Tirana, Silvio Gonzato, during a meeting he had with the chairman of the Central Election Commission, Ilirjan Celibashi, to discuss the progress of organizing the parliamentary elections on May 11 in Albania.
In a context where Albania is in negotiations with the European Union, according to Ambassador Gonzato, these elections will be an important factor in assessing Albania’s readiness to become a member of the EU.
“Therefore, the EU will continue its commitment and support for the CEC, including after the elections, with the aim of further strengthening Albania’s electoral framework, including addressing the long-standing recommendations of the ODIHR,” said the European Union ambassador in Albania, Silvio Gonzato.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Gonzato added that every political actor is familiar with the methodology used by the ODIHR in its reports.
“The ODIHR is completely independent and we respect their independence. We always support their recommendations. That is why we are working closely with them and we look forward to their final report,” declared the ambassador.
Gonzato reinforced his statements regarding the importance of the May 11 elections for Albania.
“These elections are very important because they are the first elections that take place since we opened negotiations with Albania and launched the ‘Foundations’, which relate to both democratic institutions and democratic processes,” he said.
Gonzato described the meeting with Celibashi as an opportunity for updates as well as to explore ways to also financially support the Central Election Commission to improve its work. (May 7)
