Brussels proposes a fee of 2 euros on each small package entering the EU

Brussels – The European Commissioner for Trade, Maros Sefcovic, presented on Tuesday a proposal to charge a fee of two euros on each “low value” package (under 150 euros) that escapes customs duties upon arrival in the EU.
“We are talking about 2 euros per package, paid by the platform,” Mr. Sefcovic said before the European Parliament in Brussels.
About 4.6 billion shipments valued at less than 150 euros entered the European market in 2024, which is more than 145 every second. Of this total, 91% came from China.
This 2 euro fee would be used to finance customs controls, which are currently overwhelmed, explained Commissioner Sefcovic.
The Commission called in February for the abolition of the customs duty exemption, which dates back to 2010, pointing out the risks of importing “dangerous products” and a significant environmental footprint from such volumes.
Brussels also denounces their impact on the environment as well as the distortions of competition with European merchants and SMEs that comply with EU standards. (May 20, 2025)
