Brussels warns the Netherlands: deficit could exceed 3 percent

THE HAGUE (ANP) – For the next four years, the Netherlands is likely still safe, but in the years thereafter, it is uncertain whether the budget will remain within the rules.
According to the committee, expenditures are rising too quickly. This is partly due to rising salaries, which means the government is also spending more on its own civil service. The deficit increased from 0.9 percent to 2.1 percent in one year. The committee mentions the Netherlands in the same breath as Cyprus, Ireland, and Luxembourg.
This is not the first warning the cabinet has received on this matter. Last month, the Council of State already reported that expenditures are rising too quickly and that the 3 percent threshold is coming into view. Finance Minister Eelco Heinen has already acknowledged that the Dutch budget “does not meet the expenditure path” recommended by Brussels.
