China and EU leaders summit Thursday in Beijing

Beijing – China confirmed on Monday that European Union leaders would visit the country for a summit on Thursday. The EU announced on Friday in a statement the trip of its two leaders, the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, and the President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

Several issues are poisoning bilateral relations, from European tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles to the restrictions that some companies from the Old Continent feel they are victims of in China.

The close economic and diplomatic partnership between China and Russia is also viewed with suspicion by many EU capitals, which accuse Beijing of indirectly supporting the Russian war effort in Ukraine.

European leaders are set to meet with President Xi Jinping, with whom they will “discuss EU-China relations and current geopolitical challenges, including the war waged by Russia in Ukraine.” With Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang, they will “discuss in more detail the trade and economic aspects of the relationship,” according to the statement.
