Climate: a hundred companies call on the EU to aim for -90% emissions by 2040

Paris – Representatives of around 150 companies or groups of investors sent a public letter on Tuesday to the European Council, the Commission, and Members of the European Parliament, stating that a 90% reduction in carbon pollution within fifteen years “should be considered a minimum ambition and not a ceiling”.

The goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 90%, a stated intention of the Commission for a year, is the subject of negotiations among member states. The commissioner in charge of the file, Wopke Hoekstra, had to postpone the presentation of his detailed project, expected “before the summer”.

The adoption of this target for 2040 depends on the climate roadmap that the EU must submit to the UN before COP30 in November.

“A robust target, supported by a set of intelligent, ambitious, and coherent public policies, will decarbonize our economies and stimulate innovation and opportunities for businesses in all sectors,” write the signatories, gathered under the impetus of an institute from the University of Cambridge.
