Climate: the EU emphasizes the importance of the decision of the International Court of Justice

Brussels – The International Court of Justice declared on Wednesday that countries that violate their climate obligations commit an “unlawful” act and could be held liable for damages by the most affected countries. The Commission emphasized on Thursday the importance of this opinion.
This decision “is important. It only confirms the magnitude of the challenge we face and the importance of climate action and the Paris Agreement, and it also reaffirms the need for collective and ambitious action,” reacted a spokesperson for the European Commission, Anna-Kaisa Itkonen, on Thursday before the press.
“Our services are currently examining the details” of what this opinion “precisely implies,” she added, as the European Union, far behind China, is the fourth largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the world, after the United States and India.
This is an advisory opinion, but lawmakers, lawyers, and judges around the world can now use it to change laws or sue states for their inaction. (July 24, 2025)
