Estonia wants NATO standard for defense of 5 percent

WARSAW (ANP) – Estonia will advocate for an increase to 5 percent, said Minister Tsahkna. “This follows from NATO’s defense plans for Europe.”
His government agreed two weeks ago to allocate 5.4 percent of GDP to defense starting next year.
The current NATO standard is set at 2 percent. Not all NATO countries currently meet this requirement. U.S. President Donald Trump wants the standard to be raised to 5 percent. NATO chief Mark Rutte also supports moving to 5 percent, but Rutte believes that 1.5 percentage points of that can be invested in areas such as infrastructure and cybersecurity.
According to Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof, Rutte wants all NATO members to meet his desired new standard of 5 percent by 2032.
Schoof has long stated that additional investments in defense are necessary. “I have always been very clear about that. But that does not mean you should immediately say yes to the first letter from the NATO Secretary-General. We really need to discuss this together,” said the Prime Minister.
