EU agrees on new rules to curb plastic pellet pollution

Brussels (dpa) – The European Union has hashed out new regulations aimed at reducing the release of plastic pellets into the environment.

Under the agreement reached by negotiators from the European Parliament and EU member states on Tuesday evening, companies handling plastic pellets will be required to adopt specific precautionary measures to prevent losses throughout the supply chain.

Plastic pellets, the raw material for manufacturing plastic products, are often spilled during transport, posing a significant environmental threat. According to the EU, such spills are the third-largest source of unintentional microplastic pollution in the bloc’s environment.

The regulations will apply to all companies handling more than 5 metric tons of plastic pellets annually within the EU, according to a statement released by the European Parliament on Wednesday..

They will cover companies using roads, rail or inland waterways, as well as ship operators entering or leaving EU ports. These firms will be required to carry out risk assessments and implement measures related to packaging, loading and unloading procedures, and staff training.

Ship operators must also ensure pellets are securely packaged and able to withstand normal transport conditions. In case of accidental loss, emergency services must be notified immediately, and all necessary steps taken to minimize environmental damage.

The rules are based on a legislative proposal from the European Commission. They must now be formally adopted by both the European Parliament and the Council of the EU before coming into force. (April 9)
