EU-Mercosur Agreement: France warns against a “forced passage” from Brussels

Paris – The Minister of Agriculture, Annie Genevard, raised her voice on Thursday against the agreement with Mercosur, stating that “concerns are strong because the Commission wants to push through.”
“This is very serious. The states have not been truly involved in the negotiation. The farmers even less,” she protested alongside her Polish counterpart Czesław Siekierski, who shares her reservations.
“We are joined in our fight by Hungary, Austria, Ireland, the Netherlands, Romania, Italy, who have expressed their strong concern. The Commission needs a qualified majority to adopt this text. It’s not a done deal,” she added, also mentioning Belgium’s commitment.
These countries have expressed reservations, but not all have clearly indicated whether they would abstain or vote against.
The blocking minority – at least four member states of the Council, representing more than 35% of the population of the European Union – does not seem to be secured for the minister. (June 25, 2025)
