EU ready to hit back with tariffs on €93bn of US goods if trade talks fail

Brussels (dpa) – European Union countries approved a proposal by the European Commission to potentially impose import tariffs on goods with a total trade volume of 93 billion Euro (109.4 billion US Dollar) if trade talks with the United States fail, EU diplomats told the German press agency dpa.

The measures include an already adopted list of targeted goods worth 21 billion Euro and a new list with additional goods worth 72 billion Euro.

US President Donald Trump recently announced that he is imposing 30 percent tariffs on imports from the 27 EU member states as of August 1.

Despite the approval of possible countermeasures, the bloc is still hoping to find a negotiated solution in the trade dispute with Washington.

Trump said on Wednesday that the US is prepared to lower threatened tariffs on European goods if the European Union opens its market further to US companies.

“If they agree to open up the union to American businesses, then we will let them pay a lower tariff,” Trump said at an AI-focused event. (24 July)
