EU: We welcome the US-China trade agreement

“We welcome the fact that the US and China announced that to some extent at least they will suspend the imposition of tariffs for 90 days,” said the European Commission’s spokesperson for Trade, Olaf Gill. He was asked at today’s press conference about the agreement between the two countries and how this is interpreted by Europe in relation to its own negotiations with the American side.

“From the EU’s side, we have been clear and consistent from the beginning that the imposition of tariffs is a backward step for global trade and the global economy. Therefore, we welcome any step that moves in the opposite direction, contributes to the proper functioning of global supply chains, supports stability and predictability for global trade and investments, provided of course that the basis of global rules is fully respected.”

Europe – US Talks

Mr. Olaf was asked about the talks between Europe and the US regarding the issue of tariffs, with him reiterating once again that he would not make any announcements, the matter is ongoing. At the same time, when asked about the trade agreement between the US and the United Kingdom and whether Europe could learn from it in its own negotiations, the Commission’s spokesperson stated that “we are closely analyzing this trade agreement that was announced between the US and the United Kingdom. As always, we will carefully assess its content and potential impacts, particularly regarding any effects on the interests of the EU or the broader global trading environment.” (12/5/25)
