The childhood home of the Albanian actor Aleksandër Moisi in Durrës has been completely reconstructed thanks to the program funded by the European Union, EU4Culture, and is expected to open its doors to the public.
This house is a first-category monument in the city of Durrës. This unique 19th-century monument, damaged by the earthquake of 2019, has been preserved with great care, respecting the original materials and structure, including the restoration of traditional masonry, wooden elements, and authentic architectural details.
The site was brought back to life thanks to the EU4Culture program, funded by the European Union and implemented by UNOPS, in close collaboration with the Ministry of Economy, Culture, and Innovation of Albania.
The authorities of the municipality of Durrës stated that after the completion of the house’s reconstruction, work will continue on the museum process so that this museum is ready to open its doors to local and foreign visitors as soon as possible.
The Aleksandër Moisi Museum House is one of the few characteristic urban houses of Durrës from the 19th century, located a few meters from the Ancient Amphitheater, in the alley next to the Byzantine walls and the “Fatih” mosque. It houses the Ethnographic Museum of Durrës. Declared a cultural monument, this house located in the heart of the old city has much to tell for the many foreign and local tourists.
Aleksandër Moisiu was engaged in the theaters of Europe where he excelled for his acting skills, especially in the interpretation of the role of King Oedipus and Hamlet. This remarkable success would lead him to showcase his talent on other stages, including those in North America.
Moisiu is honored both in Albania and in Austria where he developed his artistic career. His name is carried by several streets in Berlin, Salzburg, and Vienna, where there is also a monument dedicated to him.
In Albania, Moisiu is regarded as the most important actor with an international career. His name is associated with several important theater institutions in the country. (July 23)
