Eurobarometer: Trust in the EU in Slovenia is below average

Brussels – The spring Eurobarometer survey has shown that 52 percent of Europeans trust the European Union, which is the highest level of trust among union residents in the last 18 years. In Slovenia, this percentage is lower, at 37 percent. Nevertheless, both at the EU level and in Slovenia, optimism about the future of the union prevails.

The survey published today reveals a 52 percent trust of Europeans in the EU, the highest since 2007. This level is even higher among young people aged 15 to 24, at 59 percent. On the other hand, the level of trust in national parliaments and governments is considerably lower, at 37 and 36 percent, respectively. In Slovenia, the trust level for all three institutions is lower. 37 percent of respondents trust the EU, the National Assembly enjoys an 18 percent trust level, and the government has a 21 percent trust level.

Europeans have also expressed a desire for a stronger and more decisive EU. Almost one in nine is convinced that cooperation among countries and regions worldwide should be based on international rules. Thus, the majority, 86 percent, believe that tariffs are harmful to the global economy. In Slovenia, this percentage is higher, at 92 percent. At the same time, 85 percent of Slovenians agree with retaliatory measures when tariffs are imposed on products from the EU, while at the EU level, this percentage is 80 percent.

Among the respondents, 81 percent support a common defense and security policy, the highest since 2004. At the same time, 78 percent are concerned about European defense and security in the next five years, with 61 percent of Slovenians feeling the same way.

In Slovenia, 73 percent (EU: 76 percent) of respondents support financial and humanitarian aid to Ukraine, while 54 percent (EU: 72 percent) also support sanctions against Russia. (May 28)
