European Commission “analyzes” Brussels ‘begging letter’ about Schuman Square

Last week, members of the outgoing Brussels government requested in a letter to five European institutions to assist in the renovation project. This is due to significant additional costs that the regional government in caretaker mode can no longer finance.

The project, which was initially estimated to cost 30.2 million euros, is now 12.4 million euros more expensive than originally expected. Time is running out: the tender for the canopy must be completed by June 30. Otherwise, the construction site will be halted, and additional costs may arise.

Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever was not pleased with the Brussels “begging letter.” He did not hesitate to describe Brussels as a “failed state” that must beg European institutions for extra funds. The Prime Minister urged the addressed institutions not to take the Brussels letter into account.

The European Commission stated in a response that it is “analyzing” the letter and will respond “in due time.” It also points out that funds for the renovation project are included in the European COVID recovery fund. Belgium can receive up to 17 million euros in loans but must first meet a number of agreed objectives. Belgium has until September next year to submit payment requests.
