European Commission wants to close Russian gas tap by the end of 2027

According to the design regulation, it will be prohibited to enter into new contracts for the import of Russian gas starting January 1, 2026. Imports under existing short-term contracts must be halted by June 17 of that year, and imports under long-term contracts by the end of 2027.

European Commissioner for Energy Dan Jorgensen is confident that supply security will not be compromised. He is also convinced that companies will not bear the consequences of terminating their long-term contracts with Russian suppliers. Since the import is prohibited by law, companies can invoke force majeure, he explained.

The Belgian Fluxys, operator of the LNG terminal in the port of Zeebrugge, is one of the companies that has a long-term contract with a Russian supplier. In a response, Minister of Energy Mathieu Binet confirms that Belgium shares the collective goal of ending dependence on Russian gas. He emphasizes the need for “sufficient legal certainty for operators of LNG infrastructure.”
