Fico: Slovakia will not support new EU sanctions against Russia unless the European Commission resolves its crisis

Bratislava – The Slovak Republic will not support the proposed 18th sanctions package against the Russian Federation unless the European Commission (EC) provides a real solution to the crisis situation that Slovakia will face after the complete halt of gas, oil, and nuclear fuel supplies from Russia. Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) informed about this on social media on Tuesday evening, TASR reports.
The European Commission presented the 18th sanctions package against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine on Tuesday. It aims to hit Russia’s revenues from energy and the military industry. The new package proposes to lower the price cap on Russian oil and to ban trading with companies operating the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines and with banks involved in circumventing sanctions.
EU member states will begin discussions on the proposal for the 18th sanctions package this week. Its adoption requires their unanimous consent. (June 10)
