Bratislava – Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic Robert Fico (Smer-SD) spoke on the phone with the Prime Minister of Spain Pedro Sánchez regarding the political leadership of the eurozone, as well as the proposed cessation of Russian gas supplies to the European Union (EU). This was reported on Tuesday by the Office of the Government of the Slovak Republic.

“At the request of the Spanish side, I had a phone conversation with Spanish Prime Minister Sánchez. We discussed the political leadership of the eurozone, where I expressed support for the Spanish candidate. We also addressed the issue of stopping Russian gas supplies to the EU from January 1, 2028, as proposed by the European Commission,” the Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic explained.

Spanish Minister of Economy Carlos Cuerpo is a candidate for the presidency of the Eurogroup (meeting of eurozone finance ministers), where he wants to challenge the current head of this association, Paschal Donohoe from Ireland.

According to Fico, Sánchez understands Slovakia’s concerns. He also informed his Spanish counterpart that if the Slovak Republic does not receive binding guarantees that would allow minimizing the damage caused by the cessation of Russian gas flow from January 1, 2028, Slovakia cannot vote in favor of the 18th EU sanctions package against Russia.

On Monday (June 30), the Slovak Prime Minister spoke on the phone with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The topic of their conversation was similarly the import of Russian gas to Slovakia and EU anti-Russian sanctions. (July 1)
