France will pay a lower contribution than expected to the EU in 2026

Paris – France will increase its contribution to the European budget in 2026 to 5.7 billion euros, whereas a rise of 7.3 billion euros was initially planned, said Public Accounts Minister Amélie de Montchalin.
“We have made a three-part reform to manage to reduce by 1.6 billion what should have been the French revenue contribution to the European Union next year,” the minister stated during a hearing before the Finance Committee of the National Assembly.
“This is a technical negotiation (…). The European Commission is not an exogenous entity with which we negotiate nothing. It is precisely a negotiation that we have conducted with all net contributing states,” she continued, following the announcement of a savings plan of more than 43 billion euros by the government of François Bayrou.
The measures are divided between a reduction in state spending, largely, but also an increase in revenue and support for production. (July 16, 2025)
