German Chancellor: Europe must be able to defend its peace

Aachen – The German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has pledged Germany’s support for the strengthening and defense of Europe. As a peace project internally, Europe has been successful, said the politician, referring to past wars in Europe during the awarding of the International Charlemagne Prize to EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Aachen. Now, Europe must also become a peace project externally.

“With all our might” continue to support Ukraine

“This includes our historical task of making Europe strong enough to restore peace on our continent and secure freedom in the long term,” said Merz.

“Germany is ready to move forward on this task with all determination in close coordination with our European partners and neighbors.”

The German government will continue to support Ukraine “with all our might,” said Merz. The defense industries in Europe must work more closely together. “We Germans are ready to make far-reaching decisions at the NATO summit in June.” There, the alliance states are expected, according to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, to agree on defense spending of a total of five percent of economic output.

Addressing von der Leyen, Merz said: “You give Europe a voice in the world, a European voice.” For this, she will be highly honored with the Charlemagne Prize. (May 29)
