Green light expected Friday for the special tribunal on Ukraine (Kallas)

Warsaw – The political approval for the establishment of a special tribunal to judge Russia for its invasion of Ukraine will be announced on Friday in Lviv, in western Ukraine, during a visit by EU foreign ministers, at the time when Russia will celebrate in Moscow the victory over Nazi Germany in 1945.

“There will be no impunity,” assured Kaja Kallas in front of the press, following an informal meeting of European foreign ministers in Warsaw.

The special tribunal for “aggression crimes” will work alongside the International Criminal Court (ICC), which has already issued international arrest warrants against several Russian leaders, including Vladimir Putin.

However, it is powerless to judge Russia for “aggression crimes,” hence the idea of creating this special tribunal, proposed shortly after the invasion of Ukraine.

Ms. Kallas also announced the release of one billion euros for the Ukrainian defense industry, funded by the interest generated from Russian assets frozen in Europe. (May 8, 2025)
