Modric Bizarrely Invests In Championship Club

With Real Madrid star Luka Modric edging towards the end of his current contract at the Santiago Bernabeu, the Italian press has been full of news surrounding the fact that there could be a potential move to Serie A newcomers Como 1907 on the cards, if Cesc Fabregas manages to avoid the drop in the 2024/25 campaign.

Few however, were expecting the news this week that the serial winning 39 year old Croatian legend would be announced as a part owner of former Premier League side Swansea City, but that is exactly what has happened for the Ballon d’Or winner.

He remains with Real Madrid and the future direction of his storied playing career is yet to be announced, but he has made a business pivot that nobody saw coming and having made an investment into the Liberty Stadium outfit, he is now a minority shareholder in the club and whilst it is clear he has no intentions of turning out as a player, or even taking a leadership role on their board, he is pretty clear that he is prepared to help out with contacts, advice and the wealth of experience his playing days have afforded him.

The deal has been bubbling along in the background for quite some time, and there is surprise from the club that the talks had not been leaked, but still, those in the wider world of football and Swansea fans themselves are still pretty much at a loss at the reasoning behind his decision.

That will not stop Swansea fans from celebrating their coup and they will be relishing the small impact his knowledge may now have on their future chances. If nothing else, the press coverage alone will have significantly impacted on their wider awareness and that will undoubtedly have some kind of impact when it comes to the sponsorship opportunities available to them when those existing deals run their course.

That alone could have a significant impact on their commercial revenues, purely on the back of his involvement and without him lifting a finger and without him tapping into the marketing opportunities he could personally hold with a reported 37.2 million Instagram following.

For now, everyone will just be watching on keenly to see what kind of more immediate impact Modric may have for the remainder of the current season, and then to see if he takes on a bigger kind of sub-role at the club if he continues his playing career for another year or two.
