Murtazani – Vayc: A responsible approach is needed regarding the common vision for the European future of the country

Brussels – The key aspects of the accession process, including the implementation of the Reform Agenda, constitutional changes, the progress of preparations for the opening of negotiations by clusters, as well as the importance of inter-institutional and inter-party consensus for successfully addressing reform priorities, were the main topics of today’s meeting in Brussels between the Minister for European Affairs Orhan Murtezani and the European Parliament’s rapporteur for the country, Austrian MEP Thomas Weisz.

During the discussions, it was emphasized that the process of constitutional changes, although complex, remains a necessary step on the country’s European path, which requires “a responsible approach and unification around a common vision for the European future.”

MEP Weisz reaffirmed his personal and institutional commitment to supporting the country on its European path and welcomed its constructive role in regional cooperation and involvement in European initiatives. Weisz also emphasized that the country has an important role as a stable partner of the European Union.

Murtezani, for his part, expressed gratitude for the continued support from the European Parliament for the country and highlighted the importance of the constructive role of MEPs, especially the rapporteurs, in preserving the credibility of the enlargement policy as a key instrument for the Europeanization of the Western Balkans.

In the context of current political and regional challenges, Murtezani emphasized the Government’s readiness to intensify the reform process, as well as to maintain an open and inclusive dialogue in the country, with the aim of building broader support for achieving the strategic goal – full membership in the European Union.

Murtezani and Weisz also reaffirmed their mutual readiness to continue intensive communication and coordinated activities that will contribute to further progress in the accession process in the spirit of mutual understanding, trust, and European solidarity.

Minister Murtezani is on a working visit to Brussels, where, according to announcements, he will have meetings with representatives of the European Parliament, the European Commission, and the Directorate-General for Enlargement and Eastern Neighborhood (DG NEAR). (May 12, 2025)
