Šefčovič will negotiate again with Americans about trade tariffs on Monday

Brussels – European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maroš Šefčovič is flying to Washington on Sunday (April 13) to continue negotiations on mutual trade policy between the European Union (EU) and the United States on behalf of the European Commission (EC) on Monday, in an effort to prevent a mutual spiral of tariffs and a trade war. This was reported by the Brussels correspondent of TASR.
The office of the Slovak European Commissioner confirmed to TASR on Friday that Šefčovič has a meeting scheduled on Monday (April 14) with U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and the top trade representative of U.S. President Donald Trump, Jamieson Greer.
He already met with both in February and at the end of March in Washington, and most recently discussed with them a week ago (April 7) during a video conference that lasted over two hours, where the topic of their discussions was the so-called reciprocal tariffs announced by Donald Trump just two days earlier.
The European Union on Thursday (April 10) suspended retaliatory tariffs on imports from the U.S. for 90 days. This was announced by EC President Ursula von der Leyen, specifying that the Union is giving negotiations a chance. Šefčovič subsequently confirmed this on the social network X, also informing that he spoke by phone about this matter with Lutnick and Greer.
“We are ready to suspend the EU’s countermeasures and start meaningful negotiations. Continuous communication and daily updates are moving us forward,” Šefčovič described the situation.
The European Commissioner for Trade during previous negotiations with American trade partners offered the U.S. a reduction of tariffs to zero on cars and industrial goods, which, according to the perspective of the European Commission, would help revive mutual transatlantic relations and also aid industrial development.
