Slovenia supported the establishment of a special court for Ukraine

Lvov – An international coalition of around 40 countries, including Slovenia, has supported the establishment of a special court for the crime of aggression against Ukraine in Lvov, which will operate under the Council of Europe (CoE). It will be responsible for investigating, prosecuting, and trying the political and military leaders of Russia.

Foreign ministers and high representatives from around 40 countries have adopted a statement committing to the establishment of a special court for the crime of aggression against Ukraine under the CoE. The countries will strive for the court to be established quickly and will also support its operation, as stated in the announcement published on the website of the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

As noted by the European Commission, the special court will be responsible for investigating, prosecuting, and trying Russian political and military leaders “who bear the greatest responsibility for the crime of aggression against Ukraine.” According to unofficial information, this involves between 20 and 30 of the highest-ranking Russian officials.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to sources within the EU, will only be able to be tried after his term ends, as he has immunity under international law.

Slovenia was represented by the State Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Melita Gabrič. As stated by the ministry, Slovenia has advocated for ensuring justice and accountability, which are crucial for maintaining the international legal order.

Even before the meeting of the so-called core group for the establishment of a special court for Ukraine, an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers took place in Lvov in western Ukraine. Gabrič emphasized that “the meeting in Lvov is a sign of our support for Ukraine and our shared commitment to peace and Ukraine’s path to the EU.” (May 9)
