Slovenian farmers against the centralization of EU common agricultural policy funding

Ljubljana – Both main organizations of Slovenian farmers, the Chamber of Agriculture and Forestry of Slovenia and the Cooperative Union of Slovenia, oppose the proposed centralization of funding for the common agricultural policy and call for the preservation of the dual pillar structure with the European Agricultural Guarantee Fund and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.

In an open letter to Prime Minister Robert Golob before this week’s European Council meeting, they expressed serious concern regarding the proposals for the future multiannual financial framework of the EU after 2027. They urged him to do everything possible to protect the Slovenian food chain.

As they stated, in a time of geopolitical instability, climate change, and changing trade conditions, food security in the EU is crucial for the stability of the entire union. “The common agricultural policy remains an indispensable tool for ensuring access to safe, sustainable, and affordable food, while also supporting millions of farmers and maintaining the vitality of rural communities,” the chamber and the union highlighted in a press release.

The proposals from the European Commission, which aim to centralize EU funding into a single fund, threaten the autonomy and integrity of the common agricultural policy, they warned. “Such approaches can lead to its degradation into a broader framework without a clear focus,” the organizations further stated.
