Keeping my freezer stocked with frozen vegetables and some meal shortcuts makes cooking family meals so much easier, which is how I fell in love with ALDI’s Potatoes O'Brien with Onions & Peppers.

Classic Potatoes O’Brien is a savory breakfast staple similar to home fries. In addition to tender potatoes, it also includes diced peppers and onions. ALDI’s version is all that, plus a blend of spices that makes this a rare freezer gem that needs no extra zhuzhing as a side dish. Here’s why my family loves this freezer find.

Why I Love ALDI’s Season’s Choice Potatoes O’Brien

As much as I love potatoes, I don’t always have time to roast them properly, and it's one of the reasons that these frozen potatoes come in so handy! You’ve got a 28-ounce bag of already-roasted potatoes ready to heat and eat at any time. The back-of-the-bag instructions include pan frying—just 10 to 12 minutes in a large skillet—but I love throwing the spuds in the air fryer. I toss them with about two tablespoons of olive oil, season them with salt, and air fry at 375°F for 10 minutes.

I make these often as a side to a slow weekend brunch (think pancakes and bacon and fresh fruit), but they are also a brilliant building block for other breakfasts. Pan -ry them and top with whisked eggs to make a hearty frittata, wrap them up with scrambled eggs and cheese for freezer-friendly breakfast burritos, or toss with a tofu scramble for a really filling vegan breakfast.

Potatoes O’Brien can do double duty as a dinner side, too. I recently served them alongside grilled pork tenderloin and a big salad. You could toss them on a sheet pan and top with seasoned chicken thighs or add them to a pot of creamy chickpea curry.

ALDI’s Potatoes O'Brien with Onions & Peppers are unseasoned, making them a blank canvas for whatever flavors you’re craving. My go-to seasonings for breakfast potatoes are always paprika, garlic and onion powders, and plenty of kosher salt, but taco seasoning or garam masala would add lovely warm spices to this staple.

Other brands sell frozen Potatoes O’Brien, but at twice the price for the same volume, I’ll be skipping any other varieties and heading straight to ALDI’s freezer section for these every time.
