The Chinese Foreign Minister on a tour of the EU starting Monday

Beijing – China’s foreign minister, Wang Yi, an experienced 71-year-old senior official, will travel to Europe next week to strengthen ties with the Old Continent, regarded by Beijing as an important trading partner and a crucial counterweight to the United States.

But several issues are poisoning relations.

In particular, trade disputes (over Chinese electric cars and French cognac) and the close China-Russia partnership, viewed with suspicion by many European capitals in the context of the war in Ukraine.

A China-European Union summit is set to be held next month in China to mark the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Beijing and Brussels.

“ Sino-European relations face significant opportunities as the world experiences an acceleration of historical transformations, with the worrying rise of unilateralism, protectionism, and hegemonic behaviors ,” emphasized Guo Jiakun, a spokesperson for Chinese diplomacy, in a veiled criticism of the United States.
