The EP delegation in Slovakia will examine the use of EU funds

Brussels – The delegation of the European Parliament (EP) Committee on Budgetary Control (CONT) will arrive in Slovakia on Monday, where it will examine the use of European Union (EU) funds and national measures aimed at protecting taxpayers’ money during its three-day visit. The EP press office informed TASR about this on Friday.

The four-member delegation of MEPs will be led by Czech Tomáš Zdechovský (EPP). “We are receiving disturbing reports about the alleged misuse of EU funds and violations of rules involving high officials and individuals connected to the Slovak government. These issues require thorough impartial scrutiny,” Zdechovský stated.

Also part of the delegation are MEPs Michal Wiezik (RE, SK), Ondřej Knotek (PfE, CZ), and Daniel Freund (Greens/EFA, Germany). During the three days, the MEPs will meet with representatives of state institutions, including the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Investments, Regional Development and Informatization, as well as with members of the National Council of the Slovak Republic, representatives of the Supreme Audit Office, the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the Agricultural Payment Agency, and the government commissioner for Roma communities.

The program also includes meetings with investigative journalists and representatives of non-governmental organizations. The discussions will focus on the use of EU funds and the transparency of their expenditure.

However, the MEPs will also be interested in issues related to the rule of law and the protection of EU taxpayers’ money, according to the press release.

The delegation will also visit the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NÚSCH), which is a significant recipient of funds from the EU Recovery and Resilience Mechanism.

Slovakia is also expected to be visited from June 1 to 3 by the EP Monitoring Group for Democracy, the Rule of Law, and Fundamental Rights, a source familiar with the matter told TASR. (May 23)
