The EU announces a new agreement with Ukraine on the import of agricultural products

Brussels – The free trade agreement with Ukraine reached on Monday is “balanced, fair, and realistic,” assured the European Commissioner for Trade Maros Sefcovic, emphasizing the quotas for “sensitive products such as eggs, sugar, and wheat.”

In order to support Kiev in the face of the Russian invasion, the European Union had established a customs duty exemption on Ukrainian agricultural products since 2022 and until June 5 of this year.

However, European farmers regularly denounced “unfair competition” from Ukraine, an agricultural giant, and called for a return to the quotas in place before the war, set in a 2016 agreement.

Brussels believes it has found a balance, thanks to the compromise sealed with Kiev over the weekend.

With the new agreement, “we are securing trade flows from Ukraine to Europe. (…) At the same time, we continue to protect the interests of our farmers,” stated European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in a statement. (June 30, 2025)
