The EU has a duty to act against Israel according to the Slovenian Minister

Brussels – The European Union has a duty to act to stop the horrific war in Gaza, said Slovenian Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon before the discussion of EU member states’ foreign ministers on possible measures against Israel for human rights violations. According to her, Slovenia supports all measures on the table.

“We must stop this horrific war. Therefore, Slovenia’s position is very clear. The European Union must use all possible measures at its disposal to prevent the continuation of the war and the killing of civilians,” Fajon said.

As she stated, Slovenia supports all measures on the table, including the suspension of the entire EU-Israel association agreement.

Among the measures for which there is some possibility of sufficient support among member states, she listed the suspension of the trade part of the association agreement, tightening sanctions against violent Israeli settlers in the West Bank, and an arms export embargo to Israel. However, she assessed that there will not be political will among the member states to adopt these measures.

Regarding Prime Minister Robert Golob’s announcement that Slovenia will act together with other like-minded member states if the union does not adopt measures against Israel, she said that we must first wait for the outcome of today’s meeting in Brussels.

Among the possible measures that could be adopted at the national level, she mentioned an arms export embargo and a ban on the import of products from illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank. (July 15)
