The EU wants to end Russian gas by the end of 2027

European Parliament (Strasbourg, France) – The European Commission unveiled on Tuesday its plan to stop imports of Russian gas by the end of 2027.

More than three years after the invasion of Ukraine, “it is now time for Europe to completely break its energy ties” with Vladimir Putin’s Russia, said Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

The European executive proposes to act in stages: banning new contracts and existing short-term (spot) contracts with Russian companies by the end of 2025, and then phasing out all imports two years later.

This roadmap will be submitted to the member states and the European Parliament.

The share of Russian gas imports in the European Union has fallen from 45% in 2021 to 19% in 2024.

But while pipeline supplies have been reduced, the Union has partly turned to liquefied natural gas (LNG), transported by ship, regasified, and then injected into the European network. Behind the United States (45%), Russia holds a central position with 20% of LNG imports in 2024, or 20 billion cubic meters. (May 6, 2025)
