The European Council summit begins today in Brussels, with the Western Balkans on the agenda

BRUSSELS – The European Council summit will be held in Brussels today and on Friday, and leaders will discuss, among other things, the reforms of the Western Balkan countries and progress in the process of Euro-integration. “Leaders will exchange views on the situation in the Western Balkans, particularly on the EU’s support for the reform efforts of partners and their European path. The discussion will follow the visit of the President (of the EU Council, Antonio) to the region from May 12 to 16, 2025,” the Council’s website states.

It is stated that the focus of the summit will also be on Ukraine and the Middle East, and EU leaders will discuss Ukraine’s membership in the Union. “They will talk about how to further support efforts for peace, together with partners, including exerting greater pressure on Russia to accept a significant ceasefire and show genuine willingness for negotiations,” the Council announced. Leaders will also consider the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, as well as the recent escalation between Israel and Iran.

EU leaders are also expected to discuss work on building defense capacities and strengthening the EU defense industry, as well as the outcome of the NATO summit in The Hague, where it was agreed that Alliance members would increase defense spending to five percent of GDP. The Council’s website emphasizes that migration and strengthening security at external borders remain key priorities of the European Council, and leaders will also consider the conclusions of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Leaders will discuss the geo-economic challenges facing Europe and the competitiveness of the EU. “Leaders will talk about global economic developments and the relationships that the EU seeks with key partners, including upcoming international summits. They will also discuss opportunities to strengthen the international role of the euro and deepen the single market,” the Council’s website states. (June 26)
