The European Council supported the adoption of the euro in Bulgaria from January 1, 2026

BRUSSELS – The European Council approved the proposal of the European Commission for Bulgaria to adopt the euro from January 1, 2026, wrote Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov on his official profile on the platform “X” (formerly Twitter).

The European Council welcomes Bulgaria’s fulfillment of all requirements for the country’s accession to the eurozone from January 1 next year, is recorded in the adopted conclusions from the meeting of the heads of state and government of the EU countries in Brussels.
The European Council calls on the Council of the EU to quickly adopt the relevant proposals of the European Commission, it is added in the text.
The Council of the EU on Economic and Financial Affairs (ECOFIN) will vote on July 8 on the remaining three decisions for the introduction of the euro by the country. Earlier that same day, the European Parliament is expected to vote on its report for Bulgaria’s accession to the eurozone, which earlier this week received preliminary approval from the EP Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs and the Subcommittee on Tax Matters.
