The first Moldova-EU summit will take place on July 4 in Chisinau

Chisinau – The first Moldova-EU summit will take place on July 4 in Chisinau. This new format of dialogue, which is set to become a regular one, reflects the deepening relationship between Moldova and the European Union and marks the transition to a new stage in the European integration process, according to the Moldovan Presidency.
The President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, spoke about this event with the European Union ambassador in Chisinau, Janis Mazeiks, during a meeting held on Wednesday, June 18.
The discussions also addressed the status of the accession process, specifically the extent to which national legislation is harmonized with European legislation. An important emphasis was placed on judicial reform, a key commitment of Moldova. The President reiterated that the state will continue to strengthen a fair and efficient judicial system for the benefit of citizens.
In light of the parliamentary elections this fall, the risk of external interference and attempts to manipulate the elections was also addressed. The head of state emphasized the importance of conducting a free election free from foreign interference, so that Moldovan citizens can freely and democratically decide their future.
Moldova submitted its application for EU membership in March 2022, following the outbreak of the illegal Russian invasion of Ukraine, and began accession negotiations in June 2024.
In a report adopted on Wednesday in Strasbourg, the European Parliament acknowledges the progress made by the Moldovan government in meeting the EU’s enlargement requirements and calls on the European Commission to intensify its support for Moldova in achieving the goal of accession.
“We welcome Moldova’s firm commitment to EU integration and recognize the strategic importance of the country for Europe. The Moldovan authorities have demonstrated remarkable determination to continue reforms and align with EU values, despite facing major challenges and external pressures from the Kremlin and its representatives,” said the EP rapporteur on this file, Sven Mikser.
In a speech delivered on March 17 in the national parliament, the head of state, Maia Sandu, stated that Moldova must be a member of the European Union by 2030.
During his first official visit abroad on June 11, the President of Romania, Nicuşor Dan, reaffirmed support for Moldova’s accession to the European Union.
“This is my first official bilateral visit as President of Romania, and I wanted it to be here. We have a special, soulful relationship. My presence here is a guarantee of the continued support that Romania provides to Moldova. This is an important moment that Moldova is experiencing: the beginning of the accession process to the European Union. Clearly, we share the same set of values and together we have the same aspirations,” highlighted the Romanian head of state. (19.6.2025)
