The head of the SNS expects that Slovakia will not vote for the EU’s anti-Russian sanctions

Bratislava – The Chairman of the Slovak National Party (SNS) Andrej Danko expects Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár (Smer-SD) to be principled and not to vote for another package of anti-Russian sanctions in the EU. He refers to the resolution of the National Council (NR) of the Slovak Republic, according to which government members should not support sanctions, as well as to the position of Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD). Danko stated this at a press conference in the NR SR on Friday, TASR reports.
“The National Council of the Slovak Republic adopted a resolution that, in my opinion, not only recommends but also obliges government members to never vote for anti-Russian sanctions again, so I welcome the Prime Minister’s statement that they do not want to vote for any anti-Russian sanctions anymore,” said Danko.
The head of the SNS is also concerned about a possible complete ban on the import of Russian energy raw materials to Slovakia. “I cannot imagine that the European Union would prohibit us from purchasing nuclear fuel, which, it must be clearly stated, cannot be replaced in our nuclear power plants. That they would harm our economy by stopping the supply of Russian gas, the purchase of Russian raw materials, and cut us off from these supplies overnight. That would mean economic catastrophe for both the Slovak Republic and some other states, including Hungary,” said Danko.
According to the head of the nationalists, even postponing the ban on the import of Russian gas, nuclear fuel, or oil is not a solution. Ultimately, the ban would mean several times higher energy prices, according to Danko. “The state will not have anything to subsidize it with,” he added.
Danko wants to propose to the Prime Minister the convening of a round table on the topic of protecting Slovakia’s national interests, either within the coalition or with the opposition, the result of which should be a change in the constitution so that Slovakia is not bound to some extent by certain EU decisions.
“It must be said that the further the pressure on politicians who will resist against Russian sanctions increases, the more it will threaten their political future, security, and may also have criminal law implications,” added Danko. (June 13)
