The Minister of Education of the Slovak Republic met in Brussels to discuss artificial intelligence in education

Bratislava/Brussels – Minister of Education of the Slovak Republic Tomáš Drucker (Hlas-SD) met on Tuesday in Brussels with the Vice-President of the European Commission (EC) for Technical Sovereignty, Security, and Democracy Henna Maria Virkkunen. The topic of their discussion was Slovakia’s intention to systematically integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into the education system. TASR was informed about this by the Communication and Marketing Department of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research, and Youth of the Slovak Republic.

According to Drucker, Slovakia perceives AI as a tool for modernizing education, developing skills, and enhancing the digital and civic literacy of students. AI is a useful means that is supposed to help children better understand the world, think critically, and develop creativity. The Ministry of Education wants students to learn to use technology safely, ethically, and responsibly.

“Artificial intelligence is meant to assist schools and teachers. It should reduce their workload, simplify lesson preparation, and tailor it to the needs of students in the classroom. At the same time, our goal is for every student to have access to technology, regardless of their background,” said Drucker.

The Ministry will present a detailed plan for the introduction of artificial intelligence into education this autumn. The plan will include the expansion of the curriculum in primary and secondary schools to include the teaching of artificial intelligence, both from a technical perspective and with an emphasis on ethical and social contexts. It is also preparing a framework of competencies for teachers and will strengthen the role of school digital coordinators to ensure that schools have professional support.

Drucker informed Virkkunen that the Slovak Republic wants to engage more actively in European initiatives in the field of developing large language models. Slovak participation has been limited so far, but the Ministry of Education recognizes their strategic importance and plans to increase involvement.

Slovakia will host the OECD Global Education Forum in Bratislava at the end of November 2025. The event will include a high-level meeting focused specifically on the role of artificial intelligence in education. “Slovakia will not be just a passive user of technology, but an active creator of its meaningful use for the benefit of education,” concluded the minister.
