Viticulture: the Twenty-Seven approve the European plan and simplify labeling for export

Brussels – The member states agreed on Thursday to the plan announced at the end of March by the European Commission to support a sector in turmoil, shaken by climate change and reduced consumption.

In order to combat overproduction, the Commission intends to offer more flexibility to the Twenty-Seven in the operations of uprooting and replanting.

Subsidies are expected to increase from 50% to 80% of the amounts invested to adapt vineyards to climate disruption.

The European states have validated this plan, with some modifications.

Wines intended for export will no longer be required to carry on the label the list of ingredients and the nutritional declaration required for the European internal market. The aim is to “reduce the administrative burden” on producers.

The Commission also wishes to develop non-alcoholic and low-alcohol wines, thanks to harmonized definitions among the Twenty-Seven. Up to 0.5°, the EU clearly endorses this designation of “non-alcoholic wine,” contested by part of the sector. (June 19, 2025)
