France pushes for EU and China to take the ‘climate leadership’

Paris – The European Union and China must “take global climate leadership” after Donald Trump’s return to the White House, a French government source said on Wednesday, on the eve of a minister’s visit to Beijing.
Agnès Pannier-Runacher, the French Minister for Ecological Transition, is traveling to China on Thursday and Friday. This is the first time in five years that a French Environment Minister has made such a visit.
“We are at a pivotal moment regarding the three themes of the visit,” which are COP30 in Brazil (November 10-21), the UN Ocean Summit (UNOC) in Nice (June 9-13), and the additional negotiation session on an international treaty against plastic pollution in Geneva (August 5-14), emphasized Ms. Pannier-Runacher’s entourage.
The summit between Beijing and the EU, scheduled to take place in China in July, is identified by France as “a good opportunity” to publicly assert Sino-European leadership on climate issues. (May 28, 2025)
