Golob and Sanchez in Madrid also on the EU’s response to the events in Gaza

Madrid – The President of the Slovenian government Robert Golob and his Spanish counterpart Pedro Sanchez have called for an immediate end to the humanitarian disaster in the Gaza area following talks in Madrid. They urged the EU to support international legal mechanisms for investigating alleged war crimes in the Palestinian enclave.
The prime ministers called for an immediate cessation of the humanitarian disaster and an end to violence in Gaza in a joint statement signed during Golob’s working visit to the Spanish capital. They also emphasized that all parties must urgently respect international law, including international humanitarian law and human rights law.
In the statement, they advocate for the preservation of humanitarian operations led by the United Nations in Gaza. They oppose humanitarian aid led by Israel, claiming it could lead to further mass displacement of Palestinians.
Slovenia and Spain also advocate for a political solution to the Middle Eastern conflict and a two-state solution in the statement.
The two countries once again called for a formal review of Israel’s actions in relation to its obligations under Article 2 of the Association Agreement between the European Union and Israel. They also advocated for further sanctions against violent Israeli settlers and those obstructing the two-state solution, as well as for an arms embargo on Israel.
“We continue to encourage the European Union to support international legal mechanisms for investigating alleged war crimes and to ensure justice for all victims,” the joint statement reads.
They also spoke about the Western Balkans. As Sanchez stated, Slovenia and Spain, based on their historical experiences, support a strong and connected EU and advocate for EU enlargement as one of the strategic priorities of the union. (May 29)
