Swedish government urges EU to impose sanctions on Israel

Stockholm – The Swedish government urges the EU to proceed with sanctions against individual Israeli ministers.

The call has been conveyed in a letter to the EU’s foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas. Which ministers are involved is something Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard does not want to disclose.

“There are a number of ministers who have spoken in an extreme manner, but I do not want to preempt the work that now needs to be done,” she tells SVT Nyheter.

The United Kingdom announced on Tuesday that it, together with Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and Norway, is imposing sanctions against the security minister and far-right politician Itamar Ben-Gvir and the ultra-nationalist finance minister Bezalel Smotrich.

According to Malmer Stenergard, the Swedish government is “incredibly frustrated” that Swedish aid is not reaching Gaza and that they want to apply further pressure on Israel with sanctions.

Sweden expressed in the spring that it wanted to see EU sanctions against certain ministers.
