The European Commission will provide Slovenia with 2.9 million euros in aid after last year’s frost

Krško – The European Commission will provide Slovenia with 2.9 million euros in aid for farmers who suffered damage due to the spring frost in April last year. According to European Commissioner for Agriculture Christoph Hansn, who was visiting Slovenia, the aid represents “solidarity in action,” as farmers should not have to face the consequences of natural disasters alone.
Farmers who suffered damage to their crops between 30 and 79 percent will be eligible for aid. For farmers whose agricultural products were damaged by 80 percent or more, aid will be allocated from the national budget reserve worth 3.5 million euros.
Aid will also be distributed according to the decree on financial assistance for addressing the consequences of damage in agriculture due to frost in 2024, amounting to 420,000 euros, and will be intended for those farms whose agricultural products were completely destroyed. The aid is expected to be paid to farmers by July 31, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Food stated in a press release.
Assistance after the frost in Slovenia was also one of the main topics of the meeting between Slovenian Minister of Agriculture Mateja Čalušić and Commissioner Hansn, who was on a two-day working visit to Slovenia on Friday and Saturday.
In a joint statement to the media after the meeting in Krško, Hansen said that the approved aid represents “solidarity in action.” “Farmers should not have to face the consequences of natural disasters alone. I am confident that direct support will reach them quickly, help them restore their production potential, and get back on their feet,” he said.
Čalušić and Hansen also discussed the future of the Common Agricultural Policy. The Minister advocated for a stable and predictable European agricultural policy in the future, including necessary funding. She welcomed the European Commission’s proposal for simplifications in the area of the Common Agricultural Policy, while also urging the Commissioner to simplify the regulation on deforestation.
